SILK – The undisputed Queen of textiles has an aura of glamour like no other. Silk and Fashion compliments each other. Silk is a natural protein fibre & is considered a gift of Nature to mankind due to the high compatibility of the fibre to the human body. India is the only producer of all the four varieties of silk namely Mulberry Silk, Tassar Silk, Eri Silk & Muga Silk. Each of these silk have its own intrinsic proprieties which are unparallel by any other fibre.

Silk is loved the world over by all civilizations from time immemorial for its beauty, grace and exquisiteness enriched further by the creative fantasies of traditionally skilled artisans who create poetries through intrinsic designs, inimitable images and vibrant colours. Its natural sheen, delightful textures, inherent sophistication and excellent drape imparts it the magnificence which no other fibre can substitute. Of late, this classical fibre has been facing unfair competition from unscrupulous manufacturers and traders of cheaper manmade substitutes like Polyester & Viscose Rayon, which they pass on to consumers as Pure Natural Silk, depriving genuine consumers and stakeholders of the real value of silk, despite paying for it. Hence, to put a stop to this unfair trade practice, “the Silk Mark’ was introduced which assures the consumer the product purchased by them is silk

Silk Mark helps the consumers to easily identify genuine pure natural silk products and go for a hassle-free shopping.

Silk Mark is an initiative of the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India through the Silk Mark Organization of India aimed at the generic promotion of silk while connecting together members of the silk fraternity of the Indian silk industry. It is headquartered in Bangalore, the hub of silk activity in the country. It has an Authorized Users (AUs) of over 4000 across the country and the scheme is being introduced to many new areas in a phased manner. Silk manufacturers and dealers of repute qualifying certain set criteria can become an Authorized User (AU) of Silk Mark.

Other Information:

India has a rich heritage in silk weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery, and craftsmanship supported by a strong domestic market. India is the largest consumer of silk and the second largest producer of silk in the world. Not able to meet the domestic demand by the country’s own silk production of 31,906 metric tons (Figure 2017-18), India imports silk from China. With the declining Chinese production, India is poised for a quantum jump in silk production and is set to become a key player in the international market. A notable feature is that, over 1 crore farmers, weavers and other artisans are engaged in Natural Silk activities. Another notable feature is that more than 50% are women who are engaged in this largely rural based ‘Sericulture & Silk’ industry. All these are possible only when we protect and uphold the purity and sanctity of silk from the onslaught from unethical trade practices and hence the SILK MARK.

Authorized Users, besides other benefits, will have the privilege to interact with our Silk Mark Executives on various issues like sourcing silk, product and process development, domestic and export market development.

Come and join the Silk Mark family to protect and uphold the purity and sanctity of silk.
